split fridges...

Never saw a commericial version, although we will be building our own. Just a couple of thoughts on it for you...

Unless you live in an extremely tropical area, having the coils outside would be a complete waste, put them into your cold air return to your furnace (if you have one) or under your house, or in a porch, where the waste heat will do some good.

Any fridge or freezer that it upright, is a complete waste of money. either buy or build your own chest type versions.

Every time you open an upright cooling box, all the cold air instantly falls out on your floor, sucking warm air inside, which it then has to cool back down. With a chest style, you lose very little coldness when you are opening it.

If you aren't into building one yourself, at least add more insulation around the one you have, minus the side that has the coils if you don't move them.

Most important though, is you need to sit down and decide what you can stop freezing and start canning instead. Once canned, a dark cool closet is much cheaper then a freezer.

If you live in an area where it gets cold in the winter, you could consider using a combination of old ideas and new tech.

Dig a cold room (outside your home), insulate it very well (mudplastered strawbale walls). Line the walls with water storage (2 liter pop bottles on their side filled 75%), install a cooling unit on the ceiling. Have the only access through the ceiling of it, with air vent that will stay open with whatever snow you get). During the winter, open the vents and let the cold air in to freeze the water. From that point on, your cooling unit only has to maintain the temperature til next winter. If laid ouit properly, it should be almost no extra cooling that is required.
