Just to add to the explaination...
Distribution voltages range from 4.8kV, 7.2kV?, 9.6kV, 14.4kV, and in
someplaces, 28.8kV. (In Michigan - Consumers territory)) The utility
then drops it down to 120/240. At my house, in the middle of town, I
share the step down transformer with 10 or so other residences. My
parents, out in the country, have a step-down all to themselves.
Compared to, as I understand in the UK, the residential voltage level
in an urban setting comes straight from the substation.
So, yes, many rural customers have a transformer all to themselves,
but it is located on the utility pole, not the house.
I wonder what an inspector would say to 240V outlets all over the
house?
