I'd switch to propane in a heartbeat except for two things: first,
the local oil companies want an arm and a leg and your firstborn
child to do an installation ($2000-3000 minimum, and that doesn't
include the bottle of gas), and second, this is a mobile home and I
can't get insurance if it has any gas appliances. That's stupid,
because there are mobile homes out there with fireplaces, for pete's
sake. But the premiums would triple, at the very least, and all the
companies I've talked to say they wouldn't issue a policy anyway.

So the only way for me to get away from the high cost of electric
water heating is to eventually go to solar hot water, and in the
meantime, minimize usage and insulate the heck out of the tank.
