Coal and petroleum will be the primary sources
of energy, backed by nuclear and water, for at
least another 10 years and probably lots longer.
The cost and geographical limitations of solar
and wind are not even close to viable for large
scale implementation - T. Boone Pickens' fanciful
election year politics aside.
Most of what we hear out there is about politics
and profit without care for or knowledge of
practical realities.
This doesn't mean that we do not try to be more
efficient and to maximize reasonable use of the
alternatives, it just means that we need to be
realistic.
It is easy for the minority of us living in the
country to imagine "off grid living" for the masses
but the majority in the big cities don't have our
options.
